New Garage: Piedmont, California

This new garage project is located in Piedmont, California. The existing garage was a structural hazard and needed to be demolished. The existing structure was non conforming to the current Piedmont Planning Code rules. As is the case in many Bay Area communities, Piedmont highly regulates this type of structure. We negotiated with the City of Piedmont Planning Department to find the best way forward to building a new safe garage structure to replace the old one. After doing some permit history research we found a way to maximize the rebuilt space with out triggering an extensive neighborhood review or variance process.

The owner wanted a craftsman style design to relate to the style of his existing house and the houses in the neighborhood. He wanted to have a tall open beam ceiling and to finish and insulate the interior space so he could use it as a workshop. At the owner’s request, we gave special attention to the construction details. We added a dormer window on one side of the garage to bring in natural light.
