San Francisco ADU’s: San Francisco, California
This project entailed the creation of 3 new ADU living units in an existing five unit building in the North Beach neighborhood in San Francisco. Two of the units were to be created in the existing basement, a challenging location to create a proper living unit in the best circumstances. The third unit was to convert an existing retail shop shop space, that had not be rented in many years, into the third unit. Creating these three units to meet all of the local and state codes was a big challenge and required using three different channels that were created by the San Francisco Planning Department to make these extra units feasible under the new zoning codes for ADU creation.
Additionally, the building had to undergo a soft story seismic upgrade. This additional aspect facilitated one of the unit’s creation under a special program to encourage ADU creation during a seismic improvement project.
